Barracas: Vía Verde, History and Festivals

Barracas is crossed by a particularly well-adapted section of the Vía Verde de Ojos Negros. Active routes, architectural history, and event dates provide different focal points for planning your trip. The route offers an active way to experience the town, the churches and historic houses an architectural perspective, the Balsa Grande a landscape perspective, and the two dates a seasonal perspective.

Nature and Routes

The Vía Verde de Ojos Negros can be used on foot, by bicycle, or in a wheelchair; individual ramps outside the original route are the exception. At the entrance to the Vía Verde at Estación del Palancar, there is a recreational area with a forest hut, playground, barbecue facilities, and public toilets.

The Balsa Grande is next to a recreational area; in the middle, it is fed by a natural spring, and it is home to native species such as moorhens. Route use and the landscape site can be compared as different focal points for your planning.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol is a Gothic masonry church dating from the 16th century. Its single-nave, three-bay nave ends in a square-ended chancel.

Historic houses from the 17th century stand on Calle Teruel; house number 15 is one of the oldest buildings in Barracas.

The Ruta del Santo Grial de Valencia runs from the Monasterio de San Juan de la Peña in Aragón to Valencia and passes through Barracas.

The Ermita de San Roque was built as a replacement after the original chapel was demolished to make way for the Valencia–Calatayud railway line. Its three-bay masonry nave has external buttresses and a pitched roof; the chancel end faces west. A procession takes place at the Ermita on 15 August.

The Fuente de San Pedro bears an inscription dating from 1576; remains of a stone coat of arms and the keys of Saint Peter can also be seen there. The religious sites therefore differ in architectural form, history of origin, and date.

Events

Recurring events include the Carrera de Montaña 15k, which has been held in Barracas every November since 2018. The Feria Agrícola, Ganadera, de Caza y Tiempo Libre de Barracas also takes place in June; it has been held there since 2005. November and June therefore place the two events at different points in the annual calendar.
