Discover Montanejos: Rock, River and Culture

Montanejos vividly illustrates the interplay of rock, river and culture. The Barranco de la Maimona is a mountain stream that flows into the Mijares at Montanejos. The landscape therefore brings together a distinctive watercourse, narrow rocky spaces and cultural sites.

Nature

The Barranco de la Maimona offers more than 400 sport-climbing and multi-pitch routes. The section of the Barranco de la Maimona in Montanejos features reddish rock walls more than 60 metres high and narrow passages that are, in some places, less than five metres wide. The figures and formations convey two different aspects of the same terrain: numerous routes for climbing and a canyon with clearly pronounced rock walls.

The Senda de la Bojera is a designated route for exploring the Barranco de la Maimona. Alongside the climbing routes, this provides an explicitly named route in the same landscape area. The route, climbing routes and narrow rock formations represent different nature themes in Montanejos that can be considered separately when planning a day.

On the water, a rafting experience in Montanejos follows the Mijares through the canyon of the Estrecho de Chillapájaros. La Fuente de los Baños is the main attraction of the municipality of Montanejos and a thermal spring. The Mijares thus connects the canyon experience with another water-related feature of the municipality, while the thermal spring provides a distinct accent.

Culture

Villa Purificación is a former summer residence and is now a cultural space and the home of Montanejos’s permanent museographic collection. It houses a permanent exhibition about the riverside landscape and the natural surroundings of the Mijares along its course through Montanejos. As a result, this cultural space focuses both on the history of the building and on the landscape along the river.

Villa Purificación has operated as an interpretation centre and been open to the public since 2019. According to oral tradition, its building plan and most of the architectural ensemble date from 1929; Villa Purificación is modernist in style. The year and the traditional account of the plan’s origin form part of the historical classification of the former summer residence.

The cultural and landscape themes can be presented side by side as different ideas for a day: the exhibition and collection on the one hand, and the route, rock and river on the other. In Montanejos, a specific cultural space and several clearly named landscape features therefore come together without merging into a single experience.
