Cycle paths

The Vélo Francette passes through Mayenne, Laval and Château-Gontier-sur-Mayenne and crosses the département for 105 kilometres, including 85 kilometres along the towpath. The département also has 130 kilometres of converted railway lines used as greenways. This greenway network connects the Véloscénie, Vélo Francette and Régalante cycle routes. The 53-kilometre Mayenne–Laval circular route is described as very easy and runs mostly along greenways and cycle paths.

Culture

The Mayenne département has 23 museums open to visitors; nine of them carry the designation Musée de France. The Musée du château de Mayenne is accessible to visitors with reduced mobility. The Robert-Tatin Museum was created around Robert Tatin's home in Cossé-le-Vivien. It includes the Allée des Géants, which is lined with 19 monumental statues made of painted cement.

History

The départemental museum in Jublains displays archaeological collections from Mayenne dating from the Bronze Age to the early Middle Ages and links its exhibitions to the archaeological remains of Noviodunum. The ancient city of Jublains became Noviodunum and covered approximately 25 hectares; it included a sanctuary, a forum, baths and a theatre.

The Saulges cave valley contains 22 caves and is described as a major prehistoric site for the study of the first settlements in western France. The château of Mayenne has more than 1,000 years of history and is described as an exceptional Carolingian palace built shortly before the year 1000. Excavations uncovered around one hundred medieval game pieces dating from the 10th to the 12th century. The Sainte-Suzanne fortress stands on a rocky promontory above the Erve Valley and resisted William the Conqueror in 1087.
