Culture and History

Azé is home to the Église Saint-Saturnin, a Romanesque church with two adjoining naves: one dates from the 11th century and the other from the 17th century. The church also houses the very old mural “La Fontaine aux paons”. The Église Saint-Saturnin also has Bell No. 2, “Augustine-Marie Immaculée Joseph”, which was classified as a historic monument by ministerial decree on December 10, 1910.

At the western end of the old town center lies a religious complex comprising the church, the priory, the presbytery, and the Franciscan convent of Buron. The Moulin de la Chesnaye, also known as the Moulin de Mirwault, was an outbuilding of the nearby Château de Mirwault. Work on Château de Mirvault was completed between 1882 and 1885.

The Moulin de Mirwault operated as a grain mill until 1890 and was used as an oil mill from 1891; this activity ended in 1914. From around 1935 until 1955, barley was milled there again. The Mirvault site is located at a strategically positioned former crossing of the Mayenne above Château-Gontier and has been used several times since the Middle Ages.

Townscape

The old town center of Azé is laid out as a linear village. The old houses stand along a single east-west axis, the Rue du Val-de-Loire, which runs parallel to the Mayenne.

Paths and Landscape

The Circuit du Contre-Halage starting from Azé is a 7.5-kilometer circular route with a duration of approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes. On the Circuit de la Roche à Azé, the return route follows the Mayenne back to the starting point.
