Culture and history

Historical evidence in Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers ranges from the Château de Courceriers to protected megalithic structures. The Château de Courceriers has been listed as a historic monument since 20 March 1987. The Allée couverte des Bonnes Dames is listed as a protected monument in Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers; it was listed on 14 June 1988. The menhir known as Pierre Longue de Lèverie is also listed as a protected monument in Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers; it was listed on 20 December 1990.

The history of the Saint-Thomas church includes several construction phases. The former Saint-Thomas church had two small Romanesque windows in its nave, as well as two chapels built in the 17th century that opened onto the choir. Construction of a new Saint-Thomas church began in 1859 with the construction of the nave and tower.

The reliquary of Saint Anne is associated with the Saint-Thomas church in Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers. It was made in 1669–1670 by the Parisian goldsmith René Hébert. In 1670, a fragment of Saint Anne’s relics was given to the Saint-Thomas parish in a small silver reliquary.

The Chapelle des Rues is a building measuring approximately 3 by 3 metres behind the cemetery of Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers on the road to Izé. On the three days before Ascension Day, penitential processions through the countryside took place at the Chapelle des Rues to protect the crops.

Landscape and trails

The Vaudelle runs at the foot of the fortifications of the Courceriers estate. The Château de Courceriers was rebuilt in the 16th century and partially destroyed in 1961.

Circular route “Circuit de St Thomas” No. 45 is an easy 7.6 km hike taking about two hours; over 7 km, it passes through the landscape and cultural heritage of Saint-Thomas-de-Courceriers. Circular route “Autour de la Vaudelle” No. 44 leads to Mont Méart, a historic and religious site dating from the 19th century with a chapel.
