Culture and History

The parish church of Montjean, the Église Saint-Martin, is a 12th-century building. Its west door was renewed in 1567. During work on the church in 1889, the transept was built, the windows were renewed and vaults were installed; this work was carried out by the departmental architect Eugène Hawke. The stained-glass window in bay 9 commemorates the 1906 inventory and depicts gendarmes breaking into the church in Montjean on 15 March 1906. In the scene, a gendarme breaks the window with a sledgehammer.

The Château de la Lanfrière is a 19th-century residential building with a French garden and an English park. It was built around 1840 by the industrialist M. Morin Blottais, who came from Laval. The estate includes a 15-hectare English park with numerous remarkable trees. Visits are possible by appointment and include the entire exterior, the ceremonial entrance and the chapel. Without a reservation, the château is accessible during the “Rendez-vous aux Jardins” and Journées du Patrimoine events.

Water and Landscape

The Étang de Montjean is a 25-hectare body of water overlooked by the ruins of an old fortified castle. Montjean lies in a valley watered by the Oudon; the road from Courbeveille offers a beautiful view of Montjean.

At Pisciculture Le Moulin du Château in Montjean, it is possible to fish for carp, trout and coarse fish.

Getting Around

The “Église” stop is served in both directions by route 108, to Laval and to La Guerche de Bretagne. The “La Planante” cycle route passes through Montjean from Beaulieu-sur-Oudon.
