Daon: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Daon is the municipality in the Pays de Château-Gontier with the most châteaux; around ten are spread throughout the municipal area. Anyone planning a trip to Daon may wish to rent a holiday apartment there.

Culture and history

The nave of the Church of Saint-Germain contains a wooden Christ dating from the 16th or 17th century, which probably comes from a former rood beam. Parc Art Daon displays land-art works made from reused objects and natural materials, inspired by the artist and Daon resident Christine David de Vinzelles. The calvary near the cemetery on the D 22 was created by the French founder Antoine Durenne.

The Château de l'Escoublère is a fortified manor house dating from the 16th and 17th centuries and stands behind deep moats. Its Renaissance fountain bears the engraved year 1570. The 16th-century Château de Mortreux is located a short distance from the Château de l'Escoublère.

Nature and trails

The towpath along the Mayenne is an 85-kilometre-long, safe walking route for all non-motorised walkers. Information boards explain the history of navigation, the built heritage, and the fauna and flora. The Circuit des Châteaux circular route in Daon allows visitors to discover the Château des Lutz. For cyclists, the section of the Vélo Francette in Mayenne runs from Ambrières-les-Vallées to Daon.

By the water

The Parcours Santé connects Parc Art Daon with the riverside area, is freely accessible and free of charge. On the banks of the Mayenne in Daon, there is a picnic area in peaceful surroundings. Activities by the water include stand-up paddleboarding, excursion boats, pedal boats, and canoeing or kayaking.

According to local tradition, an unexpected healing in the vicinity of Daon later attracted numerous sick people on a pilgrimage to the Chapelle de la Tremblaye.
