The province of Albacete combines the typical plain of La Mancha with the mountainous Sierras de Alcaraz and del Segura. In Albacete and throughout the wider province, historic buildings, museums, festivals, castles, rock art and wine traditions come together.

Anyone choosing Albacete as a travel destination may wish to rent a holiday apartment for this purpose.

City and culture

The Pasaje de Lodares connects Calle Mayor with Calle Tinte. The covered passage was built in 1925 according to a design by architect Buenaventura Ferrando Castell in the postmodernist-historicist style and has 44 Ionic columns and 12 pilasters.

The Iglesia Catedral de San Juan Bautista de Albacete is a Gothic-Renaissance church with a Latin-cross plan and three naves of equal height. It was built at the beginning of the 16th century over an older Mudéjar church dating from the late 13th century.

The Museo de Albacete is located in the city centre, in Abelardo Sánchez Park. It preserves archaeological holdings from various sites in the province, as well as ethnographic and art-historical collections. Nine permanent archaeology galleries are arranged chronologically from prehistory to the 19th century; there are also four galleries for fine arts.

The Teatro Circo de Albacete opened in 1887 and was the city's first purpose-built venue for leisure and culture. It was designed for theatre and circus performances. The former Iglesia de la Asunción now serves as the Centro Cultural of the same name. It has a Renaissance-Mudéjar coffered ceiling and a Renaissance cloister from the late 16th century.

The permanent exhibition at the Museo de la Cuchillería includes historic cutlery and bladed objects.

History and events

The Castillo de Almansa combines Islamic and Christian military architecture. The Castillo de Chinchilla de Montearagón has a moat carved directly into the rock, measuring ten metres wide and six metres deep. The castle can only be viewed from the outside.

The Feria de Albacete is a ten-day festival in September that attracts thousands of people. The Tamborada de Hellín takes place mainly on Holy Wednesday and Good Friday, when thousands of drummers parade through the streets. In November 2018, the Tamborada de Hellín was declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. The Festival Internacional de Circo is one of the events held in Albacete.

Landscape and trails

The signposted Camino de Santiago de Levante runs from Almansa in the province of Albacete to Escalona in the province of Toledo.

In the province of Albacete, several rock shelters are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Rock Art of the Mediterranean Basin on the Iberian Peninsula.
