La Herrera: Greenway, Festive Traditions and Manchego Cheese

The Mayos de La Herrera were traditionally sung on 30 April from 10 p.m. and always before midnight. For this singing, people gathered in the atrium of the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora del Pilar up to its entrance. The Mayos were accompanied by guitar, lutes and violin. Two or three female singers led verse by verse, while the other villagers repeated them as a chorus.

Festivals

La Herrera's patron-saint festivals take place on 12 October in honour of the Virgen del Pilar as the main celebration and on 15 May in honour of San Isidro Labrador as the secondary celebration. The celebration of the Virgen del Pilar includes masses, processions and the distribution of roscas de la caridad. The celebration of San Isidro includes a procession, a mass and festive competitions such as ploughing and trailer pulling.

A 16th-century goldsmith's work from Toledo leads the processions of Holy Week, Corpus Christi and the local festivals. Singing, religious ceremonies and festive competitions thus create different cultural accents that can be considered separately when planning a trip around specific dates.
