Socovos: Rock Art, Churches and Water Sports
Socovos makes a striking cultural statement with its Levantine rock art, which is part of the UNESCO World Heritage. For planning purposes, culture, landscapes, water activities and scheduled events can be considered as separate areas of focus alongside one another.
Culture
The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Socovos dates from the 16th century and is notable, among other things, for its wooden coffered ceiling. The Iglesia Nueva dates from 1949; its furnishings include Baroque altarpieces and religious images, including the Dolorosa, the Virgen del Pilar, Saint Anthony of Padua and the Crucified Christ. The Ermita de San Felipe y Santiago, rebuilt in 1820, houses images of the patron saints from the workshop of Salzillo. The Los Bañuelos archaeological site preserves evidence of Roman baths.
Nature
The ZEC-ZEPA Sierra de Alcaraz y Segura y Cañones del Segura y del Mundo protected area also extends across Socovos. Near the town centre of Socovos, the Falla de Socovos can be seen with numerous striations and polished surfaces. The Ruta de las Pozas de Socovos begins at Plaza Doctor Fuster (Olmo de La Feria) in Socovos. The different themes and the named starting point can be incorporated separately into personal day planning.
The combination of the named starting point, visible geological formations and a protected area offers different scales for nature days in Socovos. A route can be classified differently from an individual terrain feature or a landscape area. Land-based nature and water activities are presented as separate topics.
Experiences
Part of the Pantano del Cenajo lies within the municipality of Socovos. Windsurfing, sailing, canoeing and fishing are possible there. The Museo del „Maleta“ contains more than 10,000 fossils and other items in an area of around 50 m². As a private museum in Socovos, it can be visited through the local tourist office.
The Romería de los Santos Felipe y Santiago is scheduled for the period from 1 to 3 May. The Fiestas de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción in Socovos are scheduled for the period from 5 to 11 August. The two festival dates fall in different months of Socovos's annual calendar. Churches, the museum, the festival calendar and water activities belong to different daily and personal areas of interest.
When booking a holiday apartment in Socovos, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can be considered as separate details on listing pages. Which of these details is important depends on your own time frame and organisational circumstances.
