Corral-Rubio – Holiday apartment between lagoons and history

The wetlands of Corral-Rubio are characterised by hypersaline lagoons of undeniable ecological importance. The Corral-Rubio lagoon complex is part of the Site of Community Importance “Lagunas Saladas de Pétrola y Salobrejo y Complejo Lagunar de Corral Rubio”, with the code ES4210004.

Nature

The Corral-Rubio–La Higuera lagoon complex is an area of significant natural interest. Its hypersaline lagoons attract, among others, flamingos, herons, ibises, ducks and bustards; the area is suitable for birdwatching.

A birdwatching and hiking route of approximately 14 kilometres connects agricultural tracks with wetlands and can be explored on foot or by bicycle. The approximate route length and the choice between walking and cycling provide two different planning parameters for exploring the landscape.

Corral-Rubio thus brings together several clearly distinguishable approaches: the wetlands represent the observation of wildlife and landscapes, while the church and Casa Grande reflect different historical layers and architectural forms. The festivals add fixed dates to the annual calendar, while pastries, Gazpachos Manchegos and the wine route make the regional character of the town visible. Travellers planning their trip can consider these focal points separately and balance their daily itinerary between nature, history, local traditions and cuisine.

There is also a recognisable range within the nature-related themes: the lagoon complex is designated as a Site of Community Importance, the birdwatching route runs along agricultural tracks and through wetlands, and the modes of transport mentioned each establish a different framework for exploration. Culture

The Church of San Miguel Arcángel dates from the late 14th century and was created by expanding a small hermitage from the 13th century. Its side chapel of the Rosary contains a Baroque altarpiece created around 1700.

In the 15th and 16th centuries, Corral-Rubio was part of the Marquesado de Villena. Casa Grande, also known as Palacio de los Núñez, is a building from the late 17th century. Its main façade bears the coat of arms of the Núñez family. It includes a courtyard with upright columns supported by horizontal lintels.

Traditions and cuisine

The Fiestas de San Miguel take place from 28 to 30 September; on the evening of 28 September, a flower offering for the patron saint forms part of the celebrations. Los Mayos are sung in the Church of San Miguel on the night before 30 April. On 15 May, the saint is carried in procession to his hermitage, located approximately 4 kilometres from the town.

Typical pastries from the area include almond mantecados, wine rolls and aguardiente rolls. Some families continue to make them traditionally and by hand. Typical dishes from the area include Gazpachos Manchegos, prepared with flatbreads made in the municipality.

Corral-Rubio is part of the La Manchuela wine route. The experience of nature can be complemented by wine tastings and visits to nearby wineries.
