Nature and Trails

In Villamalea, the PR-AB 42 begins in the hamlet of Tabaqueros and leads to a spring-fed lagoon considered a suitable place for observing the local birdlife. The trail passes through various huertas with traditional structures. These include masonry, rammed earth, adobe bricks, bread ovens, gardeners’ houses and water conduits.

This combination of trail, water and traditional building methods makes the PR-AB 42 a route with several clearly visible facets: the landscape and birdlife stand alongside traces of traditional use. The different elements lie along the same described route and can therefore be experienced together directly.

Circular Trails and Water Landscapes

The PR-AB 40 Cueva de los Ángeles is an easy 12.8-kilometre circular hiking trail leading to the Cueva de los Ángeles. It starts and ends at the spring by the San Antón Hermitage in the municipality of Villamalea. The surroundings of the Cueva de los Ángeles are characterised by turquoise-coloured water. This protected excursion destination has been restored to facilitate access and ensure its preservation.

The PR AB-41 Tollo de la Tortuga-Tamayo is a 12-kilometre circular trail of low difficulty. Its route passes through areas classified as Sites of Community Importance (LIC) and Special Protection Areas for Birds (ZEPA). Along the route lies the Tollo de la Tortuga, a natural bathing pool located in a ravine. The trail lengths of 12.8 and 12 kilometres, together with the stated low difficulty levels, provide an objective basis for comparison: comparing the circular trails makes it possible to distinguish the desired day-trip distance from the type of trail described in each case.

Culture and Local Insights

Villamalea’s cultural heritage includes the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Anunciación. It is a Baroque monument and is designated as a Bien de Interés Cultural. Bodegas SAAC offers another local sightseeing opportunity: guided tours of the bodega are available there in Villamalea all year round.

On 15 August, Villamalea hosts the Carrera de Camas as part of the patron-saint festivities in honour of the Virgen de la Asunción. This date complements the bodega tours available throughout the year with a fixed date in the local events calendar. The year-round bodega tours and the Carrera de Camas scheduled for 15 August therefore stand alongside one another as offerings with different dates.

Geographical Location

Villamalea is 63 kilometres from Albacete and can be reached via the CM-3201 road.

When planning a trip to Villamalea, travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions in the details of a holiday apartment can be considered separately. These three points concern different aspects of an offer: the timeframe, the accommodation category and the conditions for a possible change. This makes it possible to structure accommodation planning independently of the trails, cultural sites and dates described above.
