Culture and History
The historic complex of Chinchilla de Monte-Aragón preserves a medieval urban layout with monasteries, churches, palaces and cave dwellings carved into the rock.
The Castillo de Chinchilla de Montearagón was largely built in the 15th century by Juan Pacheco, the Marqués de Villena. It is a municipally owned monument open to visitors. Its polygonal layout is defined by thirteen semicylindrical towers along the walls.
The Iglesia de Santa María del Salvador has a Baroque interior; its stylistic development ranges from Gothic-Mudéjar to 18th-century Neoclassicism. The Baños Árabes date back to the period between the 11th and 12th centuries. Two parallel rooms with barrel vaults have been preserved, along with a narrower room running perpendicular to them, star-shaped skylights and pools in the southern room.
The Museo de Cerámica Nacional represents 576 Spanish pottery workshops, particularly those from Chinchilla, and houses around 2,000 pieces collected since 1973. The Museo Parroquial is a museum of sacred art in the former sacristy of the parish church.
In the second half of the 13th century, Dominicans settled in Chinchilla and founded the monastery now known as the Convento de Santo Domingo, originally called the Convento de San Juan. The Mudéjar cloister of the Convento de Santo Domingo is divided into two structures in the Gothic-Mudéjar style and features brick pointed arches from the 14th century and segmental arches from the 15th century.
The Puerta Herrada is the most important medieval city gate; it had two towers and led to the square. Las Tercias is a Renaissance building from the 16th century on Calle Virgen de las Nieves. Its ground floor has a vaulted ceiling and served as a storehouse for the tithe.
The Silo de los Pacheco currently houses the Oficina de Turismo of Chinchilla. The ashlar building was begun towards the end of the 15th century by the stonemasons Pedro de Castañeda and Diego Hernández; the ground floor contains several barrel vaults. Plaza de la Mancha is a rectangular square from the 18th century that is used for municipal celebrations.
The Museo Parroquial is open on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, half an hour before and half an hour after Mass. Visits can be arranged by telephone on 967260039.
Other places: La Molata, Ayna, Caudete, Casas-Ibáñez, Letur, Mahora, Robledo and Munera.
