El Cañar: Nature, Reservoir and Culture

The CENAJO SO-07 route connects Socovos with the Cenajo Reservoir and passes through the hamlet of El Cañar. The described section of this route ends after 2.1 kilometres at the Cenajo Reservoir, where views of the reservoir can be enjoyed.

Paths and Water

On the CENAJO-SO-07 route, adapted paths lead through Mediterranean forests to the road to El Cañar and onwards to the Arroyo de Benizar. Access to the Cenajo Reservoir is via the hamlet of El Cañar. It is recommended to leave your vehicle there and continue on foot to the reservoir. The route also reaches the El Cañar campsite, whose swimming pool and leisure area are available as a place to rest. In this way, the route combines forest, shoreline and reservoir with different sections that can be clearly distinguished within the described route.

Nature

In the area around the Cenajo Reservoir, you can walk through eucalyptus forests and the extensive surrounding mountains. Among other species, Spanish ibex, golden eagles, eagle owls and otters can be observed there. The walking path along the Arroyo de Benizar passes through typical riverside vegetation and offers opportunities to observe salamanders, midwife toads and European pond turtles. Near El Cañar, the Arroyo de Benizar reveals the unique Almenes enclave.

Activities

Culture

In the wider surroundings of El Cañar lies Los Bañuelos, a settlement from the Late Roman Imperial period between Socovos and Férez, with remains of Roman thermal baths. Also in the wider surroundings of El Cañar, Solana del Molinico features schematic rock art with three panels, predominantly rendered in shades of red. The two sites therefore represent different historical forms of expression: architectural remains on the one hand and pictorial representations on the other.

Cuisine

The regional cuisine includes homemade tapas as well as dishes such as Gazpacho Manchego, chickpea stew and bean stew.
