La Roda: Culture and Historic Architecture

La Roda is home to the oldest example of civil architecture in the town, represented by the so-called Lienzo de Doña Ana and the Casa del Inquisidor.

Townscape

In the centre of La Roda, there are traditional houses of La Mancha. The streets and squares of La Roda preserve a traditional layout. Numerous coats of arms of the nobility have been preserved in the streets of La Roda.

History

The Casa del Doctor La Encina is a Renaissance-style town palace built at the end of the 17th century, with a Baroque portal design.

The Casa del Inquisidor or de los Atienza was built in the second half of the 16th century as the family home of the Pérez de Oviedo. Its façade is Plateresque and built of ashlar masonry.

The Posada del Sol was formerly accommodation and a trading post for travellers on the Camino Real between the Levante and the centre of the Iberian Peninsula.

Today, the Posada del Sol provides space for lectures, conferences, theatre performances, open-air cinema in summer, concerts and civil weddings.

Culture

The church of Iglesia del Salvador de La Roda houses a significant late-17th-century Churrigueresque Baroque altarpiece in its rectangular main chapel.

The former 16th-century Christian chapel of San Sebastián was acquired by La Roda Town Council in 1983 and now serves as a municipal cultural venue.

The Centro Cultural San Sebastián hosts, among other events, art exhibitions and the international Rafael Canogar sculpture competition.

By prior reservation, the Antonio Carrilero Foundation offers free visits to the studio of the painter Antonio Carrilero.

The Museo Municipal de La Roda comprises 932 items and is divided into six thematic rooms.
