Valdeganga on the Júcar – Trails, History and Festivals

Valdeganga lies on the banks of the Júcar and is considered a rural destination shaped by river landscapes and local traditions. The river, historical traces and trails of varying lengths connect the themes found in the municipality and its immediate surroundings.

Trails

The approved PR-AB 06 Río Júcar hiking trail begins and ends in the town centre of Valdeganga. It runs along public agricultural tracks and a traditional path beside the Júcar River. The trail then continues through Valdeganga’s cultivated fields into the Júcar Valley, where a river landscape carved into rock walls begins.

The PR-AB 06 also has a 2.3-kilometre out-and-back branch to a gorge near Cañahorro. This variant leads into the Canahorro area in the municipality of Jorquera. Different trail lengths make it possible to distinguish shorter detours from longer routes.

A 22-kilometre cycle path follows the former road that connected Valdeganga to Albacete via Tinajeros; it opened in 2003. The Ruta Bolinches is an 11.5-kilometre circular route connecting Valdeganga with Bolinches via both banks of the Júcar. Near Moranchel, a section of the approximately 8-kilometre Puente Torres-Moranchel circular route leads to an old power station.

Nature

The Parque Fluvial “Puentes de Valdeganga” is a recreational area on the Júcar River. From there, various routes run along both banks, upstream and downstream. Fishing is possible as a leisure activity on the banks of the Júcar in Valdeganga.

At Charco Azul near Bolinches, the Valdemembra flows into the Júcar. The site can be reached via an additional 1.8-kilometre out-and-back trail. Las Mariquillas is considered a recreational and leisure area 3.5 kilometres from Bolinches.

Valdeganga’s viewpoints include the Mirador de la Ceja on the Ceja of Valdeganga, which offers views of the Júcar Canyon. La Balsa is also one of the viewpoints and provides views of the Júcar and the irrigated Huerta below.

Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial de la Purísima Concepción has a Baroque-Rococo main altar and ceiling paintings. It also has a bell named Santa Teresa, dated 1640. By the river lie the ruins of the Ermita de San Benito, a Gothic place of worship from the 12th century; pointed arches are still preserved in the ruins.

Puente Torres is home to the oldest bridge in the municipality. Some historians attribute it to Roman origins. The Ruta Bolinches follows the Camino Romano; at La Abadía, a reproduction of a Roman funerary stele from the 1st century AD can be seen there.

In the municipality of Valdeganga, El Santo preserves the ruins of the ancient city of Vallislonga. According to the surviving Itinerary of Antoninus, the Sexta Mansio stood there on the imperial Roman road leading from the south to Zaragoza. The caves of Cueva de los Moros served as a natural lookout point from which a large area and people crossing the river could be observed.

Local history associates Cueva de los Moros with people who hid there during the Christian Reconquista until their final expulsion in 1253.

Festivals and Customs

The patron saint festivities in honour of the Virgen del Rosario take place on the first weekend of October and last five days. Since 2023, they have held the title “Fiestas de Interés Turístico Regional de Castilla-La Mancha”.

Jueveslardero is celebrated throughout the comarca with a trip to the countryside and the traditional consumption of mona, a sweet bread made with grape must and containing a boiled egg. On Resurrection Day, pine trees are placed in the streets of Valdeganga and religious processions are held. After a poem or criticism has been recited publicly, bouquets of flowers called “albricias” are given out.

Local festival customs also include a pilgrimage to the countryside in honour of a saint, decorated floats and a ploughing competition known as the “corte”.
