Cenizate – Churches, Archaeology and Rural Paths

Cenizate is a place where sacred architectural history, settlement traces reaching far back into the past and rural paths can be read in concrete locations. The Church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves has a Latin cross floor plan; on Cerro Pelado, a human community associated with the Bronze Age emerged around 4,000 years ago. Culture and History

The Church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves in Cenizate was classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural by Royal Decree of 30 April 1991. At the entrance to Cenizate from the direction of Fuentealbilla and Albacete, the Ermita de Santa Ana stands on the small Cerro de Santa Ana hill. The Ermita de Santa Ana and the surrounding grounds were protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category by a decree of 8 October 1991.

The patron-saint festivities at the Ermita de Santa Ana include the “Bajada de la Abuela Santa Ana” on the evening of 24 August. The Romería de San Isidro leads to the El Tejar site. A work dedicated to Saint Martin of Tours was completed in 1600.

Archaeological Traces

Cerro Pelao is a small hill with an archaeological site belonging to Cenizate, bordered by the Cañada de Cardeal. In the area around Cenizate, pottery, a few coins and arrowheads point to traces of Iberian and Roman culture, as well as continuous settlement during antiquity.

Landscape and Paths

Dry-stone huts have been preserved throughout the municipality of Cenizate. They form part of the ethnographic heritage of La Manchuela. The rural paths of Cenizate offer hiking routes. The Cañada de Cardeal route leads on a walk through Los Pocicos and over Cerro Pelao. The second route of the Cañada Real runs between Villamalea and Cenizate. Cenizate is part of the Valle del Cabriel Biosphere Reserve.
