Discover Molinicos: Murals, Trails and Museums

As part of the “Molinicos – Museo a Cielo Abierto” project, the Murales de Molinicos form an art and tourism trail through the entire town. The route “Escenarios de película en Molinicos, casco antiguo y museos” connects the old town, museums, the Charca de los Molinos, the Puente Arco Medieval, the former town hall and the church. The film route takes approximately two hours and is suitable for all groups.

Culture and history

The former town hall of Molinicos was built shortly after municipal emancipation in the mid-19th century. Today, it houses the Museo Micológico “La Casa del Níscalo”, which is dedicated to the world of mushrooms and mycology and is considered the only museum on this subject in Castilla-La Mancha. The former building and the Casa del Níscalo can be visited free of charge as part of a guided tour, subject to prior reservation.

The machinery of a former grain mill has been preserved at the Molino del Jaro, where the process of grinding wheat to produce flour is explained. The Museo y Ruta de los Oficios de Molinicos is designed as an ethnographic tour of traditional ways of life and occupations connected with the land, mountains and use of water. Groups, schools and secondary schools can visit this tour on any weekday by prior reservation.

The Molinicos tourist office provides visitor services in the town and its surrounding area. It also offers guided tours of the filming locations of “Amanece que no es poco”, as well as the La Casa del Níscalo and Museo y Ruta de los Oficios museums. The “Música en los Rincones” music event offers three days of culture and free concerts in a special setting in the Sierra del Segura.

Routes and scenery

The Ruta Atalayas leads to watchtowers built between the 10th and 12th centuries. It is a 6.5-kilometre circular route with an approximate duration of two hours. The trail begins near the centre of Molinicos and passes through the old town via Calle Molinos on the return journey.

The Ruta El Bujero begins in the centre of Molinicos and ends back in Molinicos after passing through the Cortijo de El Retamar. El Bujero is a natural rock fissure at an altitude of approximately 1,100 metres, with views over parts of the municipalities of Molinicos, Elche de la Sierra and Letur.

La Charca is a small waterfall with a pool formed by the Arroyo Morote, near the Puente de los Patos. A Roman aqueduct, later used as an irrigation channel, can also be seen at La Charca. The municipality of Molinicos is part of the Parque Natural de los Calares del Río Mundo y de la Sima.

Around Molinicos, trails pass through pine forests and by waterfalls, including the waterfall of the Arroyo Morote.

Townscape

Molinicos lies between two streams. White houses and rising streets create architecture typical of the mountain region.
