The Mesones–Argel route begins in the hamlet of Mesones and is an 18.20-kilometre circular trail. It passes through extensive pine forests and opens up a small part of the Calar del Mundo.
Landscape and nature
At the summit of Calar Pico Argel, at an altitude of 1,690 metres, dense forests give way to open areas with shrubs and scrubland. At the foot of Pico Argel, the route passes the thousand-year-old yew, "Tejo milenario", in the middle of a sinkhole. The thousand-year-old yew in the sinkhole complements the larger forms of the forest, summit and scrubland with a single tree.
Routes along the Mundo River
The Ruta micológica de Mesones al Quejigal follows the Mundo River for most of its length. Along the route, poplars, willows, ash trees and individual plane trees providing shade grow beside the Mundo River. As a result, the riverbank landscape is shaped by several tree species alternating along the path. As a linear trail, the route connects Mesones with El Quejigal. Its starting point is at kilometre 205 of the CM-412, which connects Elche de la Sierra and Riópar, at the level of the hamlet of Mesones (Molinicos).
The two trails differ in their basic form: the Mesones–Argel route returns to its starting point as a circular trail, while the Ruta micológica de Mesones al Quejigal connects Mesones with El Quejigal. For planning your own day, the trail format and length are therefore two separate points of reference. The landscapes also differ: pine forest and summit contrast with the course along the riverbank and its various tree species.
Surroundings
Several named elevations lie around Mesones. Padroncillo, Almenaras and Las Crucetas are mountains; Cumbres del Halcón is a summit located there. The names refer to different landscape features in the hamlet’s immediate surroundings and can be considered separately when putting together your own excursions. Coimbra Del Barranco Ancho, an ancient site, is also located in the surroundings of Mesones. Thus, traces of an older history emerge in the area alongside the mountains and summit.
Culture
The Fiestas de Mesones, held in honour of San Antonio, take place in August. The date adds a festive occasion in the village to the nature-related experiences and can be considered independently of the routes mentioned when planning your schedule.
A holiday apartment in Mesones can be assessed according to your own travel dates, preferred room category and cancellation conditions. This information helps align the accommodation decision objectively with your planned stay, without mixing the different landscape and cultural topics. Travel dates, room category and cancellation conditions can also be considered separately. This keeps the accommodation information limited to these personal parameters, while the circular trail, linear trail, riverbank, mountains, ancient site and August date remain separate topics.
