The “Tras las huellas de Vandelvira” cultural route leads in El Bonillo to the town hall, a 16th-century building with superimposed double arcades and clear features of civil architecture inspired by Vandelvira.

Culture and History

The Iglesia de Santa Catalina stands in a square in El Bonillo. It has a Baroque Churrigueresque altarpiece and a spiral staircase leading to the tower. The Museo Parroquial del Santísimo Cristo de los Milagros is located inside the parish complex. Visits are possible by prior appointment; it is recommended to enquire beforehand at the parish or from the Cofradía del Santísimo Cristo de los Milagros.

The Rollo o Picota de El Bonillo is located on Cerro de San Cristóbal. It was erected in 1538 and symbolises the town’s right and jurisdiction to administer justice.

Festivals and Cuisine

El Bonillo’s Semana Santa is recognised as a festival of regional tourist interest. It includes seven brotherhoods and religious confraternities: Jesús del Huerto, Caída de Jesús, Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno, Armaos, San Juan Evangelista y Nuestra Señora de la Soledad, Jesús de Medinaceli and Nuestra Señora de los Dolores; the first six have their own marching bands.

The Feria de Tradiciones y Artesanía Villa de El Bonillo takes place in June on the weekend closest to the feast day of San Juan. It offers workshops, the sale of handicrafts, traditional sports, music and traditional dance.

Traditional cuisine in El Bonillo includes ajo mataero, also known as ajopringue, and atascaburras. At weddings formerly celebrated in El Bonillo, the typical dishes were often supplemented by migas con chocolate.
