Discover Fuentealbilla: History, Wine and Festivals

Fuentealbilla’s historical story begins at the Fuente Grande, also known as the Fuente de la Mora: the Roman structure dates from the 3rd century AD and is also an ancient Roman cistern connected to Fuentealbilla’s historic saltworks.

Culture and Festivals

Fuentealbilla’s saltworks belonged to the Verástegui family in the 15th century. The Fuente del Pilar, an 18th-century fountain, stands in Fuentealbilla’s main square.

The parish church of Santiago Apóstol in Fuentealbilla was built in the 18th century. Its floor plan is shaped like a Latin cross; above the crossing is a dome covered with glazed tiles.

Fuentealbilla’s esparto craftsmen produce handcrafted objects that are regularly exhibited as part of the Fiestas del Cristo. Year after year, Fuentealbilla’s Belenes Parroquiales are created as elaborate scenes featuring mountains, flowing water and even pyramids.

Fuentealbilla’s traditional animal blessing takes place in the church on 17 January. Children and adults bring their pets and then share blessed bread.

In August, Fuentealbilla holds its patron saint festivals in honour of the Santísimo Cristo del Valle. The Noche de las Carretillas is a celebration featuring fire, light and gunpowder and marks the end of the Cristo festivities.

The Romería de San Isidro is linked to Fuentealbilla’s agricultural tradition. On Jueves Lardero, children and families spend the day in the countryside and in nearby rural areas.

In Fuentealbilla, Miguel Ángel González Martínez and members of the former Manchegas group teach traditional dance to anyone interested; participants are of different ages.

Landscape and Nature

El Galayo is part of La Cañada, one of Fuentealbilla’s most scenically rich areas. La Cañada is a seasonal rambla that crosses the municipal areas of several towns before reaching the Júcar at Jorquera.

The Fuente del Galayo comprises a spring cut into vertically layered limestone, a rocky peak and a pool with abundant marsh vegetation.

Wine and Visits

Bodega Iniesta produces its wines from its own vineyards. The Bodegas Iniesta offer tastings of D.O. Manchuela wines made from local grapes. Bodega Iniesta also offers tours of the winery and vineyards.

Hiking and Activities

The Ruta El Galayo is an 18-kilometre circular hiking trail with a low level of difficulty and a duration of just over five hours. During the Ruta El Galayo, an old washhouse restored in 2009 was visited.
