In the center of Yeste stands the 13th-century Castillo de Yeste; it was built over an earlier Muslim complex, and its columned Patio de Armas features Gothic-Renaissance design. From the 13th to the 16th century, the Castillo served as the residence of the commanders of the Order of Santiago.

Culture and history

In the Castillo, the “Tierra de Frontera” Medieval Interpretation Centre presents the medieval history of the Sierra del Segura in seven rooms. The Patio de Armas is used year-round for cultural and leisure events, including exhibitions and historical events.

The Iglesia de la Asunción de Yeste preserves a Sorrowful Virgin attributed to Francisco Salzillo and combines Late Gothic and Renaissance architecture. It can only be visited as part of tours organized by the Ayuntamiento de Yeste or with volunteers from the Asociación Romeros de San Bartolomé.

The Museo Etnológico de Yeste is located in the castle’s former dungeons. Through objects donated by residents of Yeste, it presents the traditional way of life of the region.

The Convento Franciscano de Yeste is also part of the town’s historic landscape: agreements for its construction began in 1619, and construction was completed in 1629. The convent has two superimposed levels with round-arched arcades and a total of twelve arches.

Traditions

The Feria de Tradiciones takes place on the last weekend of October, unless it coincides with All Saints’ Day, and is recognized as an event of regional tourist interest. The fair includes a craft market, stalls selling traditional food and drinks, and an exhibition of local livestock belonging to local stockbreeders.

During the fair, you can discover crafts such as embroidery, esparto work, basket weaving, bread baking and metalworking.

Natural setting

A considerable part of the municipality of Yeste belongs to the Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima, a karst landscape with striking limestone formations. The Microrreserva Cerro de Rala lies within the municipality in the natural park’s peripheral protection zone; it is a limestone plateau with prominent cliffs and limestone walls.

Peñas Coloradas is a protected mountain area in Yeste overlooking the Tus Valley. Pine forests and reddish limestone rock characterize this landscape.

Peñas Coloradas can be reached via the A-9 from the hamlets of Torrepedro and Los Collados, followed by an uphill forest track. Because there is private property in the area, visitors should walk only on public paths.

Routes and activities

The “Camina por Yeste” route network includes hiking, cycling and horse-riding routes through the municipality. The paths lead to natural, ethnographic and historic attractions as well as various hamlets.

The Ruta al nacimiento de Arroyo Bravo begins in the hamlet of La Parrilla in the municipality of Yeste, in the province of Albacete. The mountain-bike route from Boche to the Puente de los Pajareles bridge has two possible starting points about one kilometer from Yeste: the hamlet of Boche and the El Pinico area.

The Microrreserva Ardal y Tinjarra has marked hiking trails and mountain-bike routes that are heavily used year-round. The different starting points, route types and activity options make it easier to compare the possibilities for planning your day.

The area around the Embalse de la Fuensanta in Yeste offers paths for hiking and cycling. Sport fishing is possible at the reservoir; especially during the summer months, visitors can also go canoeing and paddleboarding there.

The Vía Ferrata del Monte Ardal includes a 55-meter-long zip line and offers views of the Tus Valley and the Calare peaks of the Sierra del Segura.

Visitor information

The Oficina de Turismo de Yeste is located in the town center at the foot of the castle and provides first-hand visitor information. The Vía Ferrata del Monte Ardal can be reached from Yeste via the CM-3206 and an approximately five-kilometer-long paved track leading to a signposted parking area.

The “Monte Ardal” visitor reception center is located about 700 meters from the built-up area of Yeste; from there, the natural park can be reached by vehicle in approximately 15 minutes. The southern entrance to the Parque Natural de los Calares del Mundo y de la Sima is via the CM-3206, which approaches the municipality of Yeste.
