History and cityscape

In the historic centre of Almansa, the Convento de las Monjas Agustinas is located on Plaza San Agustín. The present complex, with its church, monastery, cells and cloister, was built in 1704. Its Baroque façade with Solomonic columns is considered one of the most significant examples of a Baroque portal in the province of Albacete.

The Iglesia de la Asunción was built in several phases from the 16th to the 19th century and features elements of Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque, Rococo and Neoclassical architecture. On Plaza Santa María, it is a prominent landmark and an important stop on a tour through Almansa’s historic centre. The Museo y Centro de Interpretación de la Batalla de Almansa is located in the same building as the Oficina de Información Turística.

From 30 April to 6 May, the Fiestas Mayores are held in honour of the patron saint Virgen de Belén; they are recognised as a festival of international tourist interest. The annual commemoration of the Batalla de Almansa includes several events on the weekend around 25 April. The evening Embajada mora on Plaza Santa María recreates the historic capture of the castle.
