Zapateros – Discover Hiking Route, Reservoir and Forest

Zapateros is listed at kilometer 14.160 on the 28.140 km-long stage from Riópar to Vianos. The hiking stage follows the Arroyo Zapateros before reaching the village. Total length, kilometer point and stream course provide three different orientation elements for planning your trip. When traveling with several interests, you can consider these points separately: the stage as a route theme, the Arroyo as a water feature, and the natural and cultural details.

For a trip with several people, you can first determine which of these themes should be the focus. This division makes different preferences visible without prescribing a specific route or order.

When searching for a holiday apartment in Zapateros, you can compare travel dates, room categories and cancellation conditions on the offers page. For your planning, hiking stage, water, forest and historical traces can be weighed alongside one another as different focal points. You determine the order of these themes according to your personal travel plans, as well as the desired balance of activity, landscape and culture.

Water

The Presa de Zapateros dam is located on the Arroyo de Las Crucetas. It is situated downstream from the confluence of the Arroyos de Los Solicos and de Las Yeguas and approximately 1,500 m from the village of Zapateros, within the municipality of Vianos.

The Presa de Zapateros is a straight concrete gravity dam with a frontal fixed-crested spillway. Its capacity is 588,955 m³. The reservoir covers an area of 6.7 hectares.

Between 2013 and 2015, improvements were made to the access and shoreline paths around the reservoir; railings, barriers and signs were also installed.

The water section can serve as a separate focus alongside hiking, nature and history. You decide whether these themes appear individually or as part of a shared daily itinerary.

Nature

Within the municipality of Vianos, the publicly beneficial forest “Zapateros” is listed as MUP No. 63. The public portion of this forest covers 1,537.7403 hectares. Pinus nigra Arn. is listed as the tree species for the “Zapateros” forest.

The area of the discovery site is characterized by Portuguese oaks and reforestation with Pinus nigra. On January 23, 2024, Myrmoxenus ravouxi was recorded in Zapateros (Vianos) at an elevation of 1,114 m.

Even within the nature theme, you can distinguish between landscape, forest and an individual discovery date. This gives your planning different levels of detail and leaves room for different interests.

Hiking and History

The route passes the ruined Molino Zapatero. The route and church history emphasize different aspects; you can consider the path and the historical context separately.

News from 1803 indicate that the church in Zapateros had reopened for worship after its reconstruction in the last decade of the 18th century.
