El Sahuco – Sanctuary, Sierra and Romería

After climbing through the pine forest, you reach the Cruz Gorda, from where El Sahúco can be viewed. A hiking route begins in the aldeа of El Sahuco and leads via tracks and paths with a gentle ascent to the Peña del Roble. The Caños of El Sahúco offer visitors the opportunity to refresh themselves with water from a spring. The spring that feeds the Caños of El Sahúco flows beneath the Ermita del Cristo. The Roble peak is located in the surroundings of El Sahuco. In the wider regional area around El Sahuco are the Las Crucetas mountain, the Cumbres del Halcón peak and the Sierra de Bogarra mountain. Culture

The Santuario del Sahúco is the meeting place for the ceremonies of the Traída and Llevada of Cristo del Sahúco, which take place on scheduled dates. The Camarín del Cristo is an octagonal room in the 18th-century Rococo style, richly decorated with rocaille, polychrome wood and gilding.

The Camarín del Cristo contains a mosaic floor from Manises, whose centre depicts the emergence of a pumpkin as a symbol of life. When examining it, the shape of the room, materials and pictorial motif can be understood as distinct details of the furnishings.

Culture and history

The festival tradition can be distinguished according to its origins, the route design and communal dining. The Romería del Santísimo Cristo del Sahúco commemorates the symbolic transfer of the image to its hermitage and is rooted in centuries-old history and devotion.

During the Romería del Santísimo Cristo del Sahúco, pilgrims set off on foot, on horseback or in decorated wagons; songs and prayers accompany them in a festive atmosphere until they arrive at the sanctuary. During the Romería del Santísimo Cristo del Sahúco, families and groups share food, typical dishes, wines from the region and long communal meals around the sanctuary.
