Nature

The Forêt départementale de Beynaves is a protected mountain area above 1,000 metres. It has toilets, a picnic area, a water point and shaded rest areas. The Forêt départementale de Beynaves also includes a 300-metre-long educational discovery trail accessible to wheelchair users.

Briançon and Mont-Dauphin are two Vauban fortifications in Hautes-Alpes that are among the twelve major Vauban sites on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Musée muséum départemental des Hautes-Alpes offers a permanent exhibition as well as a cultural programme on the cultural and natural history of the département. It presents natural history, fine arts, decorative arts, archaeology, ethnology and contemporary creations across five levels and approximately 1,600 square metres. The Sacré Dauphiné exhibition explores 1,500 years of Christian objects and architecture in the Southern Alps.

The Festival de Chaillol combines classical music, jazz, world music and contemporary creations.

Mountains and water

La Durance à vélo connects Briançon and Avignon over 438 kilometres in nine stages. The first stage runs from Le Monêtier-les-Bains to L’Argentière-La Bessée through forests, along mountain streams and through villages made of stone and wood at the foot of glaciers.

Lac de Serre-Ponçon offers paddling, sailing, water skiing, wakeboarding, kitesurfing, swimming and boating. The lake is described as Europe’s largest artificial lake and as a destination for sailing, paddling and other water sports.

Les Orres offers skiing above Lac de Serre-Ponçon and Embrun. Many ski resorts in Hautes-Alpes offer winter trail programmes with alpine panoramas and varied routes.
