Nature and trails
The Balade de Montreviol is a moderately difficult 6.9-kilometre circular hike starting in La Bâtie-Neuve. It passes through forests, pastureland, wide paths and steep trails, offering views of the Gapençais basin as well as the Charance and Céüse mountains, Mont Colombis and the Chapeau de Napoléon. In the Forêt du Sapet, there are several accessible hiking trails; a treasure hunt hike starts at the Maison forestière du Sapet in La Bâtie-Neuve. The north-western part of the Forêt domaniale du Sapet belongs to the “Piolit-Pic de Chabrières” Natura 2000 network.
Culture and history
The present-day Chapelle Saint-Pancrace dates from the 16th century and replaced an older church considered to be the oldest in the area. Until 1707, it was the parish church. It was renovated in 2009, overlooks the old cemetery, and services are held there for funerals.
The Parcours du Lézard combines the local heritage with artistic installations such as frescoes, mosaic benches and photographs. The route of La Bâtie-Neuve’s medieval fortifications has been preserved as a small path along which the gardens of the houses on the Grande Rue open out; it serves as a peaceful walking route. The dolmen, which bears witness to the region’s first clearers of the land around 2000 BC, is located on private property with no permitted access; in 2009, the municipality had a reconstruction built at the roundabout near the collège.
Local life and events
The Confiturerie Jean-Marc CHATELAIN in La Bâtie-Neuve produces jams, compotes, juices, chutneys and coulis and offers product tastings as well as a boutique. Festi’Théâtre, the theatre festival of La Bâtie-Neuve, is scheduled for September in Hall No. 750; a play is planned for each evening, including performances for young audiences.
