In Puy-Saint-Pierre, the Sentier des Chapelles follows old mule tracks through the hamlets’ rich architectural and religious heritage. Along the way, there is a viewpoint overlooking Briançon and the upper Durance Valley.
Culture and history
The Musée de l'Église is located in the sacristy of the Église Saint-Pierre. It displays sacred relics, military objects and a model of the village. The museum is open only as part of organised guided tours.
The Mine de Combarine is part of the area’s history: it was operated using artisanal methods from 1824 to 1929 and subsequently industrially until 1962. Along the route, explanatory panels provide information, allowing the mine to be visited independently. At the Four à Chaux, rare remains of lime production have been preserved, directly connected with the history of coal.
The traditional village of Puy-Saint-Pierre was largely destroyed during the 1944 Liberation fighting and rebuilt after the Second World War. The parish church of Saint-Pierre was listed as a historic monument by decree of 29 August 1989.
The Cadran Zarbula du Pinet dates from 1842 and, as part of the Maison, au Pinet, was listed as a historic monument by decree of 21 March 1995. The Cadran solaire de l'Église de Puy-Saint-Pierre dates from 1994.
The Chapelle Saint-Sixte contains frescoes, including a 16th-century Pietà . Its construction was authorised in 1497 by the Archbishop of Embrun. The exterior façade bears an 1808 fresco depicting Saint Sixtus, Saint Peter and Saint Anthony.
