At the same time, the Réserve Naturelle Régionale des Baronnies orientales extends across Barret-sur-Méouge, Éourres, Salérans and Val-Buëch-Méouge in the Hautes-Alpes department and covers 970 ha. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Barret-sur-Méouge can therefore consider the village as a destination when planning their own trip.
Nature
The Gorges de la Méouge are located in the Hautes-Alpes department between Châteauneuf-de-Chabre and Barret-sur-Méouge. From the Belvédère du col Saint-Ange viewpoint on the Crête de Chabre route, views extend across the Céans and Méouge valleys to the Ecrins Massif and Saint-Genis mountain. Due to limited parking in the Gorges de la Méouge, shuttle buses operate from Barret-sur-Méouge and Châteauneuf-de-Chabre.
Culture and History
The former Eglise Saint-Laurent, dating from the 12th century, is now a ruin. It belonged to the Benedictine Abbey of Saint-André-les-Avignon. The local population venerated the church and regarded it as the first church built in this valley. The remains of the Chapel of the Penitents can also be seen on the hills above Barret-sur-Méouge.
The Cadran solaire de Barret-sur-Méouge sundial is located on the wall of the village school. It bears the motto “Certains resteront, d’autres choisiront l’illusoire chemin du partir”. The schoolchildren depicted on the sundial are considered a symbol of the village.
