Abriès lies at the confluence of the mountain torrents Guil and Bouchet and is part of the Queyras Regional Nature Park. Anyone who has chosen Abriès as their holiday destination will want to rent a holiday apartment there.
Nature
The surrounding area is also characterised by striking elevations: Jilly is a mountain in the vicinity of Abriès. Pointe de la Lauze is a summit there, as is Pic Arnaudet. L’Eypiol is considered a mountain in the vicinity of Abriès.
Winter and Cycling
The alpine ski area of Abriès has slopes between 1,550 and 2,450 metres above sea level, representing a difference in altitude of 900 metres. There is also a children's park at the foot of the slopes. Abriès is connected to La Peynian by a marked ski touring trail.
Nestled among larch trees, the Abriès bike park features downhill and all-mountain trails, bermed turns and airy bridges. The “Initiation Mini Rider” activity is a mountain biking programme for young people that starts in Abriès and follows the Guil.
Culture and History
The parish complex of Abriès comprises the entire parish church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul, the Pénitents Chapel and the presbytery enclosed by a surrounding wall. It was listed as a historic monument by a decree dated 7 February 2014.
The Church of Saint-Pierre et Saint-Paul preserves medieval elements, including its bell tower and stylophore lions. These are complemented by a 16th-century portal, a wooden dome and a painted vault in the choir. Fort Queyras is a fortress in the vicinity of Abriès. The wider regional area also includes Castello di Bagnolo, a castle, Palazzo Roletto, a palace, and Fort de Mont-Dauphin, a fortress.
Local Tradition
The programme of the Fête du Pain in Abriès includes a practical workshop on building a pizza oven from clay and straw, as well as preparing and baking pizza over a wood fire.
