The sites mentioned include Etruscan structures, medieval monuments, the World Heritage site “Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco and Other Franciscan Sites”, as well as restored buildings on Isola Polvese.
Culture
The Palazzo della Penna preserves six panels by Joseph Beuys. They originate from his performance with Alberto Burri, held at Rocca Paolina on 3 April 1980. The lower basin of the Fontana Maggiore is decorated with relief panels by Nicola Pisano and Giovanni Pisano; the twelve months of the year are depicted, each with its zodiac sign. The Pozzo Etrusco is considered an important example of Etruscan hydraulic engineering and architectural technology and is introduced to visitors through an explanatory video.
The Cattedrale di San Lorenzo offers tours of the cathedral and its artworks, the Museo Capitolare with archaeological excavations, as well as a virtual tour. The burial site of the Cai Cutu family from the 3rd to the 1st century BC, including the grave goods, is reconstructed in the M.A.N.U. Museo Archeologico nazionale dell’Umbria. The Casa Museo Palazzo Sorbello displays paintings, porcelain, printed works, manuscripts and embroidered textiles in a noble palace with frescoed rooms and views over Perugia and the Assisi Valley.
The POST – Perugia Officina della Scienza e della Tecnologia is an interactive science museum of the city and province of Perugia and the most important regional institution for science communication. The Terre del Perugino-Trasimeno musei network connects more than 30 cultural institutions in six municipalities under a common administration and with a shared admission ticket.
History
Rocca Paolina can be crossed inside because it incorporated the houses, towers and streets of a medieval city district. The Rocca Paolina Museum traces the history of this significant structure. The upper part of the Porta Marzia, an Etruscan gate dating from the 3rd century BC, was integrated into its façade.
The Arco dei Funari is a freely accessible outdoor site. People with mobility impairments can reach it via Via Vibi. Further historical traces are preserved by the Chiesa di San Giuliano: a section of Roman opus reticulatum is located in the retaining wall of its forecourt.
Franciscan Sites
The World Heritage site “Assisi, the Basilica of San Francesco and Other Franciscan Sites” is associated with Saint Francis and includes medieval masterpieces by Cimabue, Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini and Giotto. The World Heritage site comprises the Basilica of San Francesco, the Basilica of Santa Chiara, Rocca Maggiore, the hermitage Eremo delle Carceri, San Damiano, Rivotorto and the Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli. The area covers 14,563 hectares and has a buffer zone of 4,087 hectares.

Isola Polvese can be reached by boat from the landing stages in San Feliciano, Passignano sul Trasimeno and Castiglione del Lago. The restored Ex Chiesa Santa Maria della Cerqua serves as a landmark for the island’s hiking trails. The restored buildings include public services, classrooms, scientific laboratories and offices.
The Castello di Difesa has a cantilevered steel walkway restored in 1999, making the battlement walk accessible and safe for visitors. Its courtyard is used as an open-air theatre for performances and concerts. The façade, the outer enclosing walls, part of the apse and a crypt of the Monastero di San Secondo o degli Olivetani have been preserved.
The San Secondo complex is located on the highest part of Isola Polvese, with the 12th-century Chiesa di San Secondo and the 15th-century Olivetan monastery Monastero di San Secondo. Villa Biagiotti is a manor house built in the 1940s in gardens designed by landscape architect Pietro Porcinai. The restored Ex Fagianaia is now a multimedia classroom and a centre for education based on experience and investigation. The restored Roccolo di caccia is used for educational birdwatching and is accessible to people with disabilities.
