The City Walls and the Castello

The elliptical city walls of Montecolognola have five towers and two gates. The Castello di Montecolognola was built between the 13th and 14th centuries from limestone with brick ornamentation. Its construction dates to the final years of the 13th century and the beginning of the 14th century and took place under the protection of the government of Perugia.

The Castello has an elliptical ground plan and is surrounded by a rectangular urban structure. The round shape of the Castello and the rectangular layout of the urban structure thus place two different architectural contours directly alongside each other.

Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunziata

The Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunziata dates from the 14th century and preserves frescoes from the 16th century. The right side chapel contains works by Gerardo Dottori, including a depiction of the Creation. The depiction of the Creation adds a distinctive artistic accent within the church.

Sanctuary south of the village

South of Montecolognola lies the Santuario della Madonna delle Fontanelle. It was built following an apparition of the Virgin Mary, during which a girl is said to have seen her while drawing water from a well. This traditional account gives the Santuario an independent religious point of reference alongside the Chiesa di Santa Maria Annunziata.
