Pianello developed in the 14th century, when the settlement shifted into the valley and the higher-lying Castrum Arnae castle became increasingly depopulated. The historic parish church in Pianello originated from the Pieve di San Valentino built in the plain, which later took the name Saints Biagio and Valentino.

Important markets have been held in Pianello’s square since the Middle Ages, attended by merchants and farmers from the surrounding areas.
