The San Francesco Museum Complex is located in the former Church of San Francesco and the historic rooms of the adjoining monastery; the church was built between 1335 and 1338. It also preserves a cycle from 1452 with twelve scenes from the life of Saint Francis.

The Church of Sant’Agostino was built in 1275 on the remains of the earlier Church of San Giovanni Battista. It contains a wooden Renaissance crucifix. The Palazzo Comunale was built in 1270 and extended across its entire left side in the 15th century.

The former Church of San Filippo Neri dates from 1705 and was converted into a theatre in 1895. The Teatro San Filippo Neri remains a versatile theatre space. The bell tower above the Palazzo Comunale is accessible following renovation and safety works and offers wide-ranging panoramic views.

Wine from Cellar to Tasting

The Cantina dei Frati was opened to visitors in 2006. It was created from ancient cellars belonging to the Friars Minor, which were uncovered during the latest restoration work and equipped with materials from the 18th and 19th centuries for wine processing and production. Historic vats for collecting, treading and storing wine have been preserved, along with a recess for accommodating a wine press.

At Montefalco nel bicchiere, a wine tasting takes place every Saturday at 4:00 p.m. in the San Francesco Museum Complex. It is led by experienced sommeliers and includes wines from the DOC Spoleto, DOC Montefalco and DOCG Montefalco Sagrantino appellations. The Sagrantino Lovers programme includes, together with a Wine Expert, a tour of the entire production chain from the vineyards to bottling.

By reservation, Cantina Romanelli offers cellar tours and tastings focusing on wines from Montefalco. The tours take you through vineyards and impressive landscapes. This provides a choice of different experiences, including historic cellars, professionally guided tastings and insights into wine production.

Panoramas and Historic Festivals

Montefalco is surrounded by 13th- and 14th-century walls and is known for its panoramic views as the “Balcony of Umbria”. Piazza del Comune is the highest point in Montefalco. Agosto Montefalchese takes place every year in August with performances and concerts. The Corsa dei Bovi is one of Montefalco’s most representative historic events.
