Holiday apartment in Torchiagina: History, Cuisine and the Chiascio
Torchiagina combines religious art, medieval history, Roman traces, culinary traditions and the Chiascio River. This creates a destination where different interests can be brought together: Discover the parish church and its art, explore the history of the historic tower, focus on archaeological finds or plan your trip around Umbrian cuisine and regional events.
Holiday apartment in Torchiagina between culture and cuisine
The Tower of Torchiagina is a prominent testament to the town's history. From the 14th to the 16th century, it played a strategic role as a border outpost of Assisi towards Perugia. However, the history of the area goes back further: Fragments of columns, mosaics, capitals and funerary urns were found in the Torchiagina area. They point to an Umbrian-Roman settlement from the 3rd century BC. Traces of a pagan temple were also found there.
The parish church of Madonna del Rosario – S. Carlo e S. Gregorio also offers a direct insight into Torchiagina's religious art. It contains an apse painting by the artist Francesca Capitini. It depicts God the Father, the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove, Christ on the cross and the Virgin Mary presenting the rosary. On 13 March, a procession carrying the relic of the heart of Blessed Maria di Gesù Santocanale reached the parish church of Madonna del Rosario e San Carlo in Torchiagina. After the procession, the week of Peregrinatio Cordis Matris was opened.
Miniature art and Umbrian cuisine in Torrenova di Assisi
In Torrenova di Assisi, you can visit a miniature of Assisi arranged across five levels. It depicts the city in the 13th century, during the time of Saint Francis. Giancarlo Bocconi built this miniature, which he calls “La Città del Sole”, entirely by hand over 18 years, using pink stone from Monte Subasio and other materials. This combines a vivid city model with personal craftsmanship.
For the 54th Settimana Gastronomica Torchiaginese 2026, the Sagra dell'Oca Arrosto, typical Torchiaginese culinary specialities and handmade gnocchi were planned as the main features in Torchiagina. The Sagra dell'Oca Arrosto was announced both for the period from 29 July to 7 August 2022 and for the period from 31 July to 9 August 2026.
Chiascio, Torre Chiascina and historic landscape
The ancient Torre Chiascina stands on the right bank of the Chiascio in a green park in the Torchiagina area. The river itself was historically a waterway for communication and trade. Wood, food and animals were transported along it. The Chiascio is therefore not only a landscape feature, but also represents the former connection between everyday life, the movement of goods and regional history.
When choosing a holiday apartment in Torchiagina, you can weigh these aspects according to your travel plans. Church art and processions appeal to a different kind of curiosity than the Roman finds, the miniature of Assisi or the history of the Chiascio. Culinary events such as the Settimana Gastronomica Torchiaginese add another distinctive element.
