Monte Malbe: trails, nature and quiet discoveries

In the area around Pantanella, nature trails, protected wildlife and historic sites come together. The Anello M19 di Monte Malbe is a moderately difficult hiking trail approximately 12.5 kilometres long; walking time is five hours without breaks. It is accessible on foot and partly suitable for bicycles and horses. Rare specimens of the Italian smooth newt and the Italian crested newt can be found at the Troscia del Melo. Both species are protected at European level. The trail also leads to the hermitage of San Salvatore, also known as the Romitorio.

Horse riding is also possible on the nature trails of Monte Malbe. Small ponds along the trails are home to wildlife populations protected at European level. Monte Malbe currently has five hiking trails. The Sentiero Fantastico is designed for families and was created especially for children and their families. The Antiquarium of Corciano is divided into palaeontological, prehistoric, protohistoric and archaeological sections. It displays fossils of Mesozoic ammonites from Migiana dating from the Lower Jurassic, as well as remains of Quaternary mammals from Ellera dating from the Lower Pleistocene. Corciano’s tourist office is located in the municipal Antiquarium.

Castelvieto: entrance through the walls, church and festival tradition

Castelvieto also combines local history with regional experiences. Today, access is through an opening in the old wall leading into the fortified village. Outside the walls stands the Church of Santa Maria, built in 1564. At the Sagra di Castelvieto, Bruschettone is served, a large bruschetta with four different toppings. At the same time, the Sagra marks the end of the August events in Corciano.

Traces of a long sacred history

The Pieve di San Giovanni in Castelvieto has a residential entrance building with an entrance leading to a large courtyard paved with stone slabs, where the church stands. The Pieve di San Giovanni Battista houses a painting of John the Baptist, the church’s patron saint. The crucifix kept there has been carried in procession during a solemn festival since 1662. In the early Middle Ages, a small, scattered settlement developed around the church; in the 13th century it was known as Villa Plebis Tiviane. The ancient parish church may have been built as early as the 7th century and was first mentioned in a document in 1136; it has been restored several times.
