Castle, lanes and performances

The Presepe vivente di Petrignano d’Assisi leads through the lanes of the medieval Castello di Petrignano and along the banks of the Chiascio River. The 44th edition of this historical performance is associated with Petrignano.

Petrignano is also associated with the La Passione Vivente, a performance held every year on the evening of Palm Sunday. Its connection with Palm Sunday gives this performance a fixed place in the annual cycle.

The castle combines stone architecture with the church interior of Santa Maria di Loreto.

A fresco in the castle

The church of Santa Maria di Loreto in the Castello di Petrignano contains a fresco created in 1502. It depicts the enthroned Madonna with the Christ Child, surrounded by seraphim and Saints Sebastian and Roch.

Because of severe moisture damage, the fresco was transferred to the parish church of San Pietro in 1897. In the landscape background of the fresco, the Chiascio is depicted with curved boats.

The Chiascio appears in the fresco with curved boats and at the same time forms the riverside landscape along the route.

Chiascio riverbanks and landscape features

The Petrignano Cross route is two kilometres long and is located in a park on the banks of the Chiascio River in Petrignano di Assisi. At two kilometres, the route length is specific and can be used as a simple planning measure for this course.

Giardini pubblici is located near Petrignano and is a garden. Monte delle Croci is located in the surrounding area and is a mountain. Monte Subasio is also located in the surrounding area and is a mountain. Arco dei Gigli is additionally located in the surrounding area and is a natural arch.

Ancient site, monastery and museums

The Temple of Minerva is located near Petrignano and is considered an ancient site. The Monastero delle Benedettine di Sant'Anna, a monastery, is also located nearby.

The National Archaeological Museum of Perugia and the Casa Museo di Palazzo Sorbello, both museums, are also located near Petrignano.

Getting there from Assisi

From Assisi, the Castello di Petrignano can be reached by bus routes E007 on the Assisi–Petrignano–Perugia connection and E210 on the Assisi–Petrignano–S. Gregorio–Valfabbrica connection. Both routes pass through Petrignano; E007 continues to Perugia, while E210 goes via S. Gregorio to Valfabbrica.

To get there by car, follow the road from the Giovanni Paolo II car park in Assisi towards Perugia. Then follow the signs for Aeroporto, Petrignano and Gubbio.
