The Church of San Michele Arcangelo is located next to the castle and was built around 1154. The ascent to the castle tower comprises 74 steps and offers a viewpoint with panoramic views. The Church of San Michele Arcangelo contains at least three frescoes attributed to Matteo da Gualdo. It also houses a large polychrome ceramic work from the 17th century in the Robbiano style. This work is attributed to Francesco Biagioli, “il Monina”. The different art forms give the church a particularly distinctive profile in addition to its period of origin.

Trails through forest and valley

The Castello di Giomici–Monte della Dea trail begins at the Castello di Giomici. It leads to Casacastalda and then back to Giomici. The route can therefore be regarded as a local connection with a return to the starting point, without requiring you to focus your stay on a single experience.

From Monte della Dea, the trail offers views of Monte Ingino and the medieval city of Gubbio. It then descends through a shady pine forest towards Pian di Tetto and reaches Casacastalda. The views, forest and succession of several different landscapes give the trail a varied course.

Another route, approximately 40 km long, runs through the forests of Assisi and Valfabbrica, passes the Castello di Giomici and Monte Biscina, and follows the Chiascio Valley. This creates a broader landscape setting in which Giomici is connected with the forests, mountains and valleys of Umbria.

Ancient sites and mountains in the surrounding area

The ancient site of Rocca Maggiore Castle and the ancient site of the Temple of Minerva are located in the vicinity of Giomici. Both destinations complement the cultural focus around San Michele Arcangelo with additional historic sites that can be taken into account when planning an excursion.
