Matigge can be discovered through specific places: the Torre Matigge, the churches of San Donato and San Nicolò, and paths through olive groves. History, sacred art and landscape each have their own point of reference here.

The Tower, Via Flaminia and Local History

The Torre Matigge was built by the municipality of Trevi at the end of the 14th century. It served as a military defensive structure against armed bands travelling along the Flaminia. Its history thus links a building with an important transport route. Anyone interested in the history of old roads and the defence of settlements will find a tangible point of connection at the tower.

The Chiesa di San Donato lies above a mountainous branch of the ancient Via Flaminia. It is also on the right-hand hydrological side of the watercourse known as Fosso di Paterno. This once formed the boundary of the historic Balìa of Matigge. Two historical references therefore converge at the church: the old road connection and a former territorial boundary.

A path near Matigge runs as a farm track through olive groves to the Chiesa di San Nicolò. The church’s semicircular apse contains frescoes attributed to Mezastris. The apse, the rounded end of the church interior, gives the frescoes a specific architectural context. If you would like to see the paintings, check access arrangements in advance.

Olive-Grove Landscapes and Visitor Information

Il Frantoio has a permanent exhibition of agricultural tools from the late 19th century. The olive mill in Matigge also offers free tastings of Olio Elite, Olio Famiglia and Olio Trevi D.O.P. Umbria Colli Assisi-Spoleto. The oils are served on bruschetta or, for experienced tasters, in small glasses. Olio Elite is mild, Olio Famiglia is full-bodied and piquant, and the D.O.P. oil is intense. Check current visiting arrangements in advance.

Il Frantoio has a large car park, including space for buses, facilities for visitors with disabilities, and a garden with a covered veranda. Check the current situation before your visit. About 250 metres uphill from the Torre di Matigge, a lay-by on the road is designated as a parking area.

Walking Routes: Time and Conditions

The first route on Itinerario 01 “Trevi 4 passi” starts in front of the Torre Matigge. Use the area near the car park opposite the cemetery or church of Matigge as a guide; the starting point is only an approximate reference. The first route is considered suitable for the whole family and can be walked year-round. Avoid the hottest hours of summer.

At the same time, the routes published as part of “Trevi 4 passi” are not currently maintained, and some sections may not be fully or easily passable. Check trail conditions before setting out.

A longer walk leads from Torre Matigge to Bovara. The route is 12.5 km long, includes about 540 metres of ascent and takes approximately five hours on foot. Allow for the walking time as a separate, longer block in your day’s plans.
