Gualdo Tadino: Ceramics, History and Mountains

Art and Culture in Gualdo Tadino

The Museo Civico Rocca Flea’s ceramics department contains 19th- and 20th-century works focusing on the local lustro technique, while the picture gallery includes works by Matteo da Gualdo and a large polyptych by Niccolò di Liberatore (l’Alunno).

The Museo Opificio Rubboli houses a collection of Rubboli maiolica with lustre decoration. Gualdese maiolica with gold and ruby lustre is distinguished by iridescent gold and ruby tones created using the famous lustro, or Riverbero, technique. The local lustro tradition appears in these collections both as a technique and as a decorative feature of the maiolica.

The Museo Regionale dell’Emigrazione “Pietro Conti” is Italy’s first museum dedicated entirely to emigration and holds documentary material on Italian emigration abroad from the late 19th century to the 1960s.

From Tadinum to Medieval Churches

Ancient Tadinum preserves several layers of history. The archaeological area covers approximately 5,000 square metres and preserves evidence of seven centuries of Umbrian-Roman civilisation. A thermal complex from the 2nd century AD contains a sea mosaic depicting Neptune on a chariot drawn by seahorses.

The Cattedrale di San Benedetto has a late Romanesque-Gothic façade with three portals and a large rose window. In its present form, it was built around the middle of the 13th century. The Chiesa di San Francesco was built from 1241 onwards and consecrated in 1315.

Giochi de le Porte is organised as a three-day event. Saturday’s programme focuses on the Corteo Storico. Saturday and Sunday have different programme items: the Corteo Storico and the competition in the main square.
