The Church of San Luca and its Works of Art

The Church of San Luca is no longer a parish church today. It was built from 1934 onwards according to a design by Girolamo Zuccari and consecrated in 1936. The church contains two frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries. They were removed from the old parish church, which had already been documented since 1333. The frescoes thus bring older works of art into a 20th-century church building.

Traces from Antiquity to Villa Zuccari

One of the special details is a processional banner from the Church of San Luca di Montefalco, dated to approximately 1500 to 1549. The Madonna della Misericordia banner depicts the Madonna della Misericordia on one side and Saint John the Evangelist on the other. The banner thus combines two sides with different depictions. Villa Zuccari also adds to the historical picture: its oldest building core dates from the late 16th century. The religious past of the San Luca district goes back even further. During the Republican period of Rome, an important place of worship dedicated to the goddess Fortuna existed there. A votive inscription from the end of the 2nd century BC names her by the epithet Melior, “the Better”.

Marian Apparitions and Pilgrimage History

The Santuario della Madonna della Stella emerged from accounts of the Marian apparitions and immediately became a pilgrimage destination. The Santuario is also associated with reports according to which Federico Cionchi is said to have experienced Marian apparitions at the ruins of the Chapel of San Bartolomeo.
