Holiday apartment in Protte: castle walls, churches and bike tours

Protte combines castle walls, church art and bike tours through the countryside. The inhabited center lies within the castle walls and is therefore architecturally shaped by the fortifications. In the town center, historic architectural forms and sacred art can be found, while the described cycling routes lead through cultivated fields and offer views of several mountain landscapes. Protte's castle walls thus face an open landscape with fields and mountain views.

Holiday apartment in Protte: castle walls and churches in the town center

Within the walls of Protte stands the old parish church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The church was rebuilt several times and has a 16th-century portal as well as frescoes from the Umbrian school. A flood of the Marroggia in 1565 led to the almost complete rebuilding of the parish church. Protte Castle was built in 1388 on the site of a previously existing open settlement. The castle walls provide the inhabited center with a solid architectural framework.

Bike tours through fields and to the mountains

The routes differ considerably when cycling. The first completely flat section of a moderately difficult bike tour passes through Protte, Beroide and Castel San Giovanni and ends in Mercatello. An easy bike tour uses the Spoleto–Assisi cycle path and then continues on ordinary roads toward Beroide. The easy bike tour to Protte follows a lightly trafficked side road through cultivated fields. To the right, it offers views of the Monti Martani; to the left, views of Monte Serano and the mountains of Valnerina. When cycling to Protte, the specific type of road and the two viewing directions toward the Monti Martani and toward Monte Serano and Valnerina are therefore important points of orientation.

Further sacred and Roman traces

The small Madonna delle Grazie church stands on the road that connects Protte with the Via Tuderte when coming from Beroide. It is also known as Santa Maria delle Grazie. Its image depicts the Madonna and Child, as well as the later-added holy intercessors Rocco and Sebastiano. A Roman travertine tombstone with an inscription for the grave of the physician Q. Anneo Tebulo comes from the surroundings of a farmhouse that belonged to the S. Luca monastery before 1881.
