Castel Rigone: Sanctuary, Lake Views and Concert Music

Castel Rigone lies at an altitude of 673 metres above sea level and offers views across the lake basin below and towards Perugia as far as Assisi. Its elevated location combines landscape experiences, traces of history and cultural events into a destination that you can discover in very different ways, depending on your interests.

Forest Paths and Landscape around Castel Rigone

The CAI hiking trail M03 from Castel Rigone to Torre di Fiume passes meadows and scrubland before continuing into forests of downy oaks and European hornbeams. Along the way, you can follow the transition between open terrain and wooded sections.

The protected natural area SIC IT5210016 Boschi di Castel Rigone is also part of the region. The area lies in the municipalities of Passignano sul Trasimeno and Umbertide, north of Castel Rigone and northeast of Lake Trasimeno. The landscape therefore extends beyond the village and connects Castel Rigone with an extensive woodland area around the lake.

Getting to Castel Rigone

The fastest road route to Castel Rigone is by car via Strada Provinciale 142 from the direction of Passignano sul Trasimeno.

Historical Traces and Sacred Culture

The Santuario Maria Santissima dei Miracoli was built in 1494 with the support of the city of Perugia as a place of protection from the plague. At the request of Pope Alexander VI, it was dedicated to Maria Santissima dei Miracoli.

Castel Rigone also has a free historical and art-historical tour with multilingual QR codes. This allows you to explore the history and art of the village in different languages, while the tour provides a distinct focus for culturally oriented days.

According to traditional accounts, the origins of Castel Rigone date back to AD 543. At that time, the Ostrogothic lieutenant Arrigo established a base there for soldiers involved in the siege of Perugia.

Historical Festivals and International Concert Music

During the Festa dei Barbari, Castel Rigone is transformed within its historic walls into a Barbarian village, where numerous craftspeople and traders are active. The festival turns the historic centre into a setting for crafts and trade and reveals a distinctive cultural side of Castel Rigone.

As part of the Festa dei Barbari, visitors can rent costumes and register to take part in the Sunday historical costume parade “La Calata dei Barbari”. Anyone wishing to coordinate their stay with such an event will find a direct, tangible connection here between the history of the village and the festival programme.

Music also has a firmly established historical connection with Castel Rigone: the Festival internazionale Giovani concertisti was founded in Castel Rigone in 1998. It is entirely dedicated to young concert musicians from Italy and many other parts of the world.

As early as 1905, it was decided to build the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi as a suitable venue for music and other artistic activities. The theatre is therefore part of the history of Castel Rigone’s cultural orientation, without this implying anything about its current use.
