Holiday apartment in Fossato Di Vico: Nature, History and Tradition

Fossato Di Vico combines natural landscapes with local history. Its highlights range from the landscape of Parco del Monte Cucco and a circular hiking trail to Roman traces, medieval architecture, sacred art and local wine-making traditions.

Natural landscape between plains, hills and the Apennines

Fossato di Vico lies within Parco del Monte Cucco. The municipal area is almost divided into two parts by the S.S. Flaminia. To the west lie plains and hills; along one stretch, they are bordered by the Chiascio River, a tributary of the Tiber. To the east extends the Apennine range, with its highest elevations, Cima Mutali and Cima Filetta, both reaching 1,120 m. The landscape therefore ranges from plains and hills to the two 1,120-metre-high elevations of the Apennines.

A circular hiking trail starting and ending at the railway station

The Anello della Cima Mutali is a circular hiking trail that begins and ends at Fossato di Vico railway station on the Rome–Ancona line. The railway station thus serves as both the starting point and the destination, allowing the loop to be planned without a separate return journey.

Roman traces and medieval festivals

The Ponte di San Giovanni was the crossing where the Via Flaminia crossed the Rigo stream in Roman Fossato di Vico, which was then called Helvillum. The Antiquarium preserves archaeological finds from Roman Helvillum as well as fragments of parchment from Dante’s Divine Comedy. The Festa degli Statuti takes place every year on the second weekend of May as a medieval festival and is based on life in 1386.

Churches, frescoes and castle architecture

The Torre e Palazzo Comunale was one of the 14 towers surrounding the old castle. The original castle of Fossato di Vico is now a ruin and is known as Roccaccio. The Chiesa di San Cristoforo dates from the 13th century and preserves large sections of frescoes from the Umbrian-Marche school of the 14th and 15th centuries. La Piaggiola preserves a fresco cycle by Ottaviano Nelli of Gubbio, his school and the Maestro di Fossato, dated to 1405–1406.

Le Rughe is a rare example of medieval castle architecture that combines access and defence along the inner western curtain wall. The Church of San Pietro is the oldest church in Fossato di Vico and was originally built as a Camaldolese monastery. The Centro museale della Civiltà Contadina contains around 1,600 objects arranged over three floors.
