Scheggino lies in the heart of the Valnerina and stretches along the banks of the Nera River. At the same time, the town is a stop on the Via di Francesco. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Scheggino can make the river landscape, historical traces and trails through the surrounding area the focus of their travel planning.

River landscapes and trails around Scheggino

Immediately outside the Porta Valcasana are the Fonti di Valcasana, a large natural garden with crystal-clear spring waters. From there, a hiking trail partly follows old transhumance routes and historic ironworks roads to the Piano delle Melette. In the park there is evidence of a fishpond complex dating from the 19th century; today, there is a lake for sport fishing. The section of the Greenway del Nera from Scheggino to Ceselli begins in the Scheggino area and runs alongside artificial canals. After the medieval gate, it becomes a flat, unpaved path leading to Ceselli.

Castles, gates and art history

The Castello di Scheggino is a triangular hilltop castle crowned by a watchtower. It was built in the second half of the 13th century to protect one of the few bridges over the Nera. The Porta del Pozzo is a 17th-century gate. The Porta Valcasana is a 16th-century gate, from which a section of the Via del Ferro once began. The apse of the Chiesa di San Nicola contains frescoes attributed to the circle of Giovanni Lo Spagna.

Truffles, products and waterways

The Museo del Tartufo Urbani illustrates aspects of life surrounding the search for, processing, preservation and distribution of truffles through displayed photographs and old working tools. The museum includes a boutique where fresh and preserved truffles, high-quality porcini mushrooms and other products can be purchased. Scheggino is connected with truffle production in the area around Scheggino and Norcia and along the Nera, Corno and Sordo rivers. Trout belong to the salmonid family and require cool, clear waters.

Active days in the Valnerina

Several different formats are available for active days. The SpoletoNorcia Gravel is a cycling tour over paved and unpaved surfaces, with steady gradients and no technical off-road sections; it is not a race and has neither a ranking nor a time limit. The Ciclovia del Fiume Nera is an easy route from Sant’Anatolia di Narco to the Cascata delle Marmore, offering a day in the nature of the Valnerina. Near Ceselli there is a high-quality climbing wall along the old road that connected the Osteria di Ceselli with the Castello di Scheggino. The Valnerina also offers guided rafting descents with canoes and inflatable boats.
