Holiday apartment in Morra: Signorelli art, village history and festivals
Morra combines art, village history, natural surroundings and festivals. At the Oratorio di San Crescentino, several layers of painting history come together, while the Pieve di Santa Maria forms the historical point of reference for the village centre. In addition, Boschi di Morra - Marzana provides a natural area.
Art and village history around Morra
The village centre of Morra developed around the Romanesque Pieve di Santa Maria. The Pieve di Santa Maria is mentioned in a bull from 1126 and in a treaty between Perugia and Città di Castello. The two documents belong to different historical contexts and connect the Pieve with the historical local history of Morra. The year 1126 and the treaty between Perugia and Città di Castello thus mark two different references within the local history. The Romanesque Pieve and the village centre therefore remain closely linked. Anyone following the village’s history will encounter the Romanesque Pieve di Santa Maria in Morra, as well as the bull of 1126 and the treaty between Perugia and Città di Castello.
The Oratorio di San Crescentino in Morra was built in 1420 and enlarged in 1507. The sacristy preserves Late Gothic frescoes from the original construction phase. The walls also feature frescoes from the workshop of Luca Signorelli. Luca Signorelli himself painted only the scenes of the Flagellation and the Crucifixion there. The building thus brings together the construction years 1420 and 1507, the Late Gothic frescoes, the workshop frescoes and the two scenes painted by Signorelli himself. Those interested in painting will encounter not only Signorelli’s name in Morra, but also Late Gothic frescoes and the Madonna della Misericordia with a distinctly Piero della Francesca-like character.
The pictorial programme of the Oratorio also includes a fresco of the Madonna della Misericordia with a distinctly Piero della Francesca-like character. It stands alongside the Late Gothic frescoes and the frescoes by the Signorelli workshop as an independent motif.
Morra is also an important stop on the Signorelli itinerary in the upper Tiber Valley. In the upper Tiber Valley, Morra is therefore part of the Signorelli itinerary, while the Oratorio di San Crescentino brings together the works and frescoes found on site.
Natural area with its own designation
Boschi di Morra - Marzana is a Natura 2000 site under the EU Habitats Directive, with the identification code IT5210006. In Morra, this natural area stands alongside the artistic and local-history themes.
Festivals at different times of the year
The season and theme vary between the festivals. The Sagra della Castagna in Morra takes place in the second ten-day period of October. Morra a Tutta Birra is a recurring summer festival in Morra. At Morra a Tutta Birra, beer and food stalls are part of the programme, alongside music and dancing. The two events therefore take place at different times of the year and have different focuses: chestnuts on the one hand, and beer, food stalls, music and dancing on the other. When planning a trip, the second ten-day period of October for the Sagra della Castagna and the summer festival Morra a Tutta Birra can be considered separately in terms of timing.
