The province of Alicante features a typical Mediterranean landscape in which beaches and mountain scenery alternate. A defining cultural heritage site is the Palm Grove of Elche: the UNESCO World Heritage Site forms an artificial oasis in the south of the province of Alicante on the Mediterranean and comprises 67 palm groves with around 45,000 date palms across 144 hectares.
The irrigation system, including the Acequia Mayor, and the traditional arrangement of the groves have been preserved in the Palm Grove of Elche. The individual plots are bordered by rows of date palms. Those who have chosen Alicante as their holiday destination may want to rent a holiday apartment.
Culture and history
The Misteri d’Elx is a sacred musical drama about the death, assumption and coronation of the Virgin Mary. In Alicante, the Hogueras de San Juan are recognised as a festival of international tourist interest.
The Castillo de Santa Bárbara in Alicante is a medieval castle from the 9th century that can be visited. From there, it offers panoramic views of the city.
At the Castillo de Castalla, the Palau, the Torre Grossa and the weapons courtyard can be visited. The Gran Tesoro de Villena, containing objects made of gold, silver, iron and amber from the Bronze Age, can be viewed at the Museo Arqueológico José MarÃa Soler.
