On the slope of the Barranco de Las Cueras, within the municipality of San Fulgencio in the province of Alicante, lies La Escuera. The archaeological site belongs to the fully developed Iberian period and dates from the late 5th to the 2nd century BC.
Culture and History
A building excavated at La Escuera in the 1960s by Solveig Nordström was interpreted as an Iberian temple. El Oral was inhabited between the 6th and 5th centuries BC and took part in trade networks in the southern part of what is now the province of Alicante.
El Oral received Etruscan products and objects directly associated with wine. The Iglesia Parroquial de San Fulgencio dates from the 18th century. The Museo Arqueológico Municipal de San Fulgencio displays finds from La Escuera, El Oral and the El Molar necropolis, dating from the period between the 6th and 3rd centuries BC, and has an educational area for school groups.
