Dénia leads into a multifaceted history: the Castillo de Dénia complex includes Almohad construction phases, the Torre Roja and Torre del Consell from the 15th century, Renaissance-style fortifications and the Palacio del Gobernador. The latter was rebuilt in the 16th and 17th centuries under the patronage of the Duke of Lerma, Marquis of Dénia.

Culture
The Castillo de Dénia dates back to the Islamic period between the 11th and 12th centuries. From Dénia Town Hall, the castle can be reached on foot via the steps on Calle Hospital and the Cuesta Madre Amparo; the route then continues to Calle San Francisco, which leads to the castle. The Archaeological Museum in the historic Casa de la Marquesa de Valero de Palma traces the development of Dénia from its origins to the 18th century.
The Cova Catxupa is a Neolithic rock shelter dating back around 6,000 years. Its paintings depict archers, hunters, goats and deer and form part of Levantine rock art, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. The Moros y Cristianos festival in Dénia has been recognised as a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Autonómico by the Valencian Community.
