Culture and History

The Iglesia Parroquial de San Jerónimo was built in 1622 in the late Renaissance style. Its interior has three naves: a central nave and two side naves that converge near the main altar. A small tower with stained-glass windows illuminates the centre of the church.

Another historical landmark is the Heredad y Torre de Rocamora. Juan Rocamora bought the Heredad y Torre de Rocamora in 1464. Later, the Heredad y Torre de Rocamora formed the core of the subsequent seigneurial estate.

Traditions

There is evidence of Auroros singing in Benferri dating back to 1872. Following the interruption caused by the Civil War, this tradition was revived and has continued to the present day. The Auroros’ Rosario prayer passes through the streets of Benferri and ends at the Iglesia de San Jerónimo, where Mass usually begins upon arrival.

The Romería is also one of the town’s religious customs. During Benferri’s traditional Romería, a procession accompanied by horses travels from the church to the Chapel of the Cross. The programme of the 2019 Benferri Romería also included a communal meal in El Vertiente Park.

El Vertiente Park is officially classified as a “paraje” and has a sports facility and areas for children. Benferri’s patron-saint festivities honour Saint Jerome and the Virgen del Rosario. Their programme included a procession with the images of the patron saints San Jerónimo and the Virgen del Rosario.
